It's All In The Wrist - Roller Derby Injuries

Our resident roller derby nurse, Chapman, is on hand to advice on all those injuries that drive us crazy and keep us off skates if not treated properly. This month we are focusing on our wrists.

A sprained wrist is a common injury in roller derby (especially if you fall small or perform four point falls regularly). With the correct treatment you’ll be back on your skates in no time. Please, as with any injury, seek medical advice the information provided here is for guidance.

As with all sports injuries you have to give them time to heal and best to limit your participation to prevent further injury (this means that you may be excused from house work). Depending on the type of sprain you obtain will depend on the treatment.

In a mild wrist sprain, your wrist may be slightly swollen and tender, and you probably will feel some mild pain when you move it. In more severe sprains, swelling can change the shape of your wrist, and you may have some bruising. Also, you'll probably feel significant pain when you try to move your wrist, or when your health care professional moves your wrist while examining it (http://www.drugs.com/health-guide/wrist-sprain.html)

Treatment usually for wrist sprains is an anti-inflammatory (please check with your pharmacist or medical professional if you are suitable to take this medication), ice and compression.

Once fully recovered, to prevent future injury, resistance bands are great for performing rehabilitation and mobility exercises such as Wrist Pronations.

Not being able to train is tough for any injured skater but it is absolutely crucial that you stay off skates and keep yourself occupied with other league duties till you're fully healed.

Stay safe, turn left and most importantly have fun!
